About Kumbh Mela

The everlasting "Pot of Nectar," which is mentioned in the Puranas, the ancient Vedic texts, is whence Kumbh Mela gets its name. In Sanskrit, Kumbha signifies "pot" or "pourer." Mela is the word for celebration. Kumbh Mela, thus, translates to "Festival of the Pot." In this context, it refers to a festival honouring the appearance of the nectar pot.

The revered Indian Vedic literature tells of the Kumbh Mela's historic beginnings. as having changed from the earlier times in the universe's history when demigods and demons worked together to create the nectar of immortality. It is stated that on the coast of the milk ocean, which is located in the celestial part of the universe, gods and demons gathered. In order to create the nectar of immortality, the demigods and the demons devised a scheme to stir the milk ocean. When the nectar was created, they then decided to divide it equally.

Kumbh Mela History and Significance

The Mandara Mountain served as the churning rod for the purpose of churning the milk ocean, and Vasuki, the king of serpents, served as the churning rope. Vishnu took on the form of a large tortoise and held the Mandara Mountain on His back as the churning caused the mountain to descend deeply into the ocean. For a millennium, the demons at Vasuki's head and the demigods at his tail churned the milky ocean.

Shiva drank the lethal poison that was first created when the milk ocean churned, but he was unaffected. A few droplets of the poison that Shiva swallowed fell from his palms and were imprisoned by snakes, scorpions, and other such deadly creatures. Shiva consumed the poison, and many luxurious objects appeared. The first cow to come was a Surabhi cow, whose milk production was boundless. Then came the production of a white elephant called Airavata and a white horse called Uccaihsrava. Subsequently, a precious stone known as the Kaustubha-mani emerged.

Beautiful dancing females, apsaras, and a myriad of other amazing creatures emerged from the milky ocean. Eventually, a man by the name of Dhanvantari emerged, holding the jug of eternal nectar in His hands. When the demigods and demons saw Dhanvantari holding the pot of nectar, they both felt nervous. The demigods grabbed the pot by force because they were afraid of what would happen if the demons drank their fair part of the nectar of immortality.

There was ferocious fighting wherever the demigods took the pot of nectar. The demigods concealed the nectar at four different locations around the planet: Prayag (Allahabad), Hardwar, Ujjain, and Nasik, in an effort to prevent it from falling into the hands of the demons. A drop of everlasting nectar leaked out of the pot and fell to the ground at each of the hiding spots. Since then, it is thought that these four locations have gained supernatural power.

Mohini-murti, the demon's wife, eventually came up to them. The demons lost all composure at the sight of Mohini-murti's captivating beauty, and they forgot everything about sipping the nectar of immortality. Mohini-murti took the nectar and gave it back to the gods, who drank it right away, leaving the demons perplexed by her beauty.

The 12-year interval is followed by the Maha Kumbh Mela. It's interesting to note that 120 million people attended this religious assembly in 2013, setting a new record for attendance. The dates of the upcoming 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela are set for April 9–May 8, 2025, in the year 2025.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu once carried the amrita, a celestial nectar, and dropped four droplets of it at four different locations. These locations were Prayagraj, Ujjain, Nashik, and Haridwar.

It is also thought that the priests in Allahabad took ideas from one of the Kumbh Melas for its ceremonies, which they then used in the Magh Mela, one of the regional fairs. The Magh Mela itself has a long history and is referenced in numerous Puranic texts.

It is a little-known fact that the name of the Kumbh Mela comes from the heavenly pot of nectar. Yes, the Asuras and the Devtas fought a significant war on this very pot. It's thought that Lord Brahma gave the Devas advice to strain the nectar. The problem was that they needed Asuras' assistance to accomplish this. The Asuras created their own counterplan to obtain all of the nectar for themselves after learning of this specific plot. The result was that the Devas and the Asuras engaged in a 12-day pursuit.

Four specific sites saw the nectar fall during this chase. After a 12-year break, this fair is conducted in these locales on a rotating time cycle.
